Sports Briefs

With Pride '93 just around the corner, I want to take a minute to urge all of you to stop by the athletic booths that will be set up. Make your summer an active one by getting involved in one of the many recreational groups serving the lesbian and gay communities.

The Cyclones cycling group will be taking a bicycle trip to Kelley's Island on Saturday, June 12. Call 651-1621 for more information.

Gay Games IV is approaching fast! These Games, with the theme of "Unity," will be held in New York in June 1994. An organizing committee for Team Cleveland, the group of athletes competing under the City of Cleveland banner, is starting to be formed. For more information, please contact either myself or Michelle at the Chronicle. Watch for future articles on the Games.

The 5th Annual Chicago International Indoor Tennis Classic will be held August

SPORTS

6,7 and 8. The tournament is sponsored by the Metropolitan Sports Association, which is a local Chicago organization that has over 1,600 members that participate in over 15 different sports.

The Classic is part of a national gay and lesbian tennis tournament circuit that involves over 2,000 participants from around the country. This is an amateur tournament with divisions in various levels of play. It is expected to involve over 200 players from across the country. To receive an application, please write Dan Sprehe, 3249 North Seminary, Chicago, IL 60657, or call 312549-4155.

Now that the Chronicle is being published every two weeks, I need as many ideas for articles as possible. Personal stories, club start-ups, team scores . . . send them my way. I would really like to spotlight athletes from the North Coast area! Remember to play hard, play fair and always Play Gay!

Food, booze were good at landlocked bowling cruise

AKRON-CANTON BUREAU

"Cruise the Caribbean with the Summit Bowling Association." This was the theme of the Akron Bowling Banquet for 19921993. Yes, Cleveland, Akron has a bowling league too! Surprise, surprise!

The evening started at 7 pm and partyers were greeted at the door with a big "Hello" and a lei (you know the kind I mean) and several tickets for free cocktails. Cocktails are always a good way to start off a cruisedon't you think?

With me and most of the League, food was on our minds. The finger food table was first, then came the main meal-a meal fit for a Cruise Ship! Guess who was the last table to go up to eat? And I was starving! Why is it that when you know you're going to do something like this in the evening, you don't eat a damn thing all day? Especially when the food is free! The meal included roast beef, lasagna, chicken, rice,

veggies and of course, dessert. It hit the spot!

Then came the entertainment with Mark Capozzi doing some very funny lip synchronization to a skit and song and a great magical show by David Suchka and his beautiful assistant. How'd they do that? Who cares! Where's our money!

This brings me to the awards. Little dollar signs dancing like sugarplums above our heads. We most of our heads anyway. I know I wasn't gonna win a thing! It included: Team High Series—Jelli Belli Deli; Male & Female High AverageJerry Vanderyt & Lori Crites; Top TeamThe Swoop Sisters, and lots and lots of other high honors. About $5500 worth plus trophies. Not too shabby for the winners.

The evening turned out great and bellies were full as well as wallets. As for me just my belly was full. Oh, I did win a bottle of whiskey, but that was a door prize. It's just as I've always said "Bowling is all luck!"
